Depression and Anxiety - The Fibromyalgia Connection

By Natasha A. Unzueta

As Fibromyalgia (FM) sufferers we are often made to feel like our pain is "all in your head", but research has consistently proven that Fibromyalgia is not a form of depression or hypochondria. IT IS REAL! However, there is a connection between FM and other chronic pain conditions to depression and anxiety. Treatment is important because both can make FM worse and interfere with symptom management.
[Depression & Anxiety]

The constant battle between home life and professional life is one of the major causes of depression and anxiety in today's woman. Unlike my grandmother who did not have to go out to work and still return home just in time to begin what I consider another full time career, home management, you have to juggle 2 full time careers. Sometimes I wonder if women foresaw this situation when the women liberation movement started many years ago.? Nevertheless that ship sailed (and docked) a long time ago.

Fibromyalgia is a common condition in which a person suffers from chronic musculoskeletal pain. There are points called tender points, sometimes all over the body, and these tender and painful points are used as part of the diagnosis of FM. Individuals with FM may also be more susceptible to pain in general. Whenever the tender points are simply touched, they can send sharp pain impulses. Many Fibromyalgia sufferers experience pain all over and some experience pain only in specific regions. It can involve the muscles and the joints. Sometimes, there is so much pain that it is hard to pinpoint exactly where the pain originates. Fibromyalgia is often accompanied by other overlapping conditions such as chronic myofascial pain (CMP), chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), restless legs syndrome (RLS), migraine & tension headaches, interstitial cystitis (IC), mitral valve prolapse (MVP), cognitive dysfunction, depression, anxiety and more. The symptoms of Fibromyalgia, alone, are wide-ranging and debilitating. Do they really think that depression and anxiety is the CAUSE for ALL of the above?

A person suffering from chronic depression should consider seeking professional help from a psychiatrist or psychologist as well. Often, speaking to a professional about how you feel and hearing them explain to you what part of your symptoms are common in depressed individuals will help you not to feel so alone.

What can cause depression & anxiety? Stressful life events, chronic stress, low self-esteem, imbalances in brain chemicals and hormones, lack of control over circumstances (helplessness and hopelessness), negative thought patterns and beliefs, chronic pain, chronic physical or mental illness, including thyroid disease & headaches can ALL cause both. Little or no social and familial support can be a main factor in depression for FM patients. Family history of depression & anxiety can also be a factor.

Hormonal fluctuations is another biggie. For most women this occurs at least once a month, sometimes twice depending on their menstrual cycles or if they've just gone into menopause. Or if they feel they have just gotten that first wrinkle on their forehead or a number of issues really. Some of these may be physical due to the decreased hormonal production that going through menopause causes but mostly it is emotional. To counteract this, you should work on your mindset. Think of it like this; we are older at this stage of this article than we were when we both started reading/writing it (5 minutes ago!) Life goes on - prepare for the next stage of your life and stop clutching onto the past because it is just that...Past! That means that you can't do anything about it except worry right?

Exercise is not only good for FM, it is also highly beneficial for depression and anxiety. Recent studies suggest exercise can change your brain chemistry. Exercising can boost your level of serotonin, a brain chemical that is effects mood and pain perception. It can also stimulate the production of endorphins, natural painkillers that can give you an overall feeling of well-being.Exercise is a great for stress, too. It relieves muscle tension and it gets the heart rate up. The combination makes us more relaxed and alert, which helps us deal with our problems in a calmer and more controlled way.

Our final reason for depression and anxiety in women is actually your eating habits.Because you are "modern" you tend to eat a lot of junk food. Grab this here, bite that there and you tell yourself that you have to "eat on the move" because you live in a fast

One of the most common flawed modes of behavior performed by every sufferer who enters into a harrowing episode of stress, depression or anxiety concerns the words they use to describe situations and events they are confronted with. In using powerful, emotive words, sufferers will trigger the fear response and the more they use such words, the worse their suffering gets.Powerful, emotive words are part of everybody's vocabulary. Sometimes, we use powerful words when we lose our temper or we become angry and frustrated. In this state, we give vent to our feelings and the emotions within us have an outlet. This is fine. For most people, once their emotions have been expressed, they return to their usual selves and life carries on as normal. But it doesn't work like this if you are prone to stress, depression or anxiety.

Most people who suffer from depression are more likely to seek counseling or medications as a form of treatment. However exercise is proven to be an effective technique for battling their condition. Exercise reduces stress and relieves the negative feelings associated with depression and anxiety. Hopefully this article will shed some light on how to battle depression using techniques other than medication.
[How To Feel Better]

Now take a fresh sheet of paper and write down all the things that you appreciate about yourself. What's great about you? Are you a good friend? A great listener? Maybe you're really good at drawing or a great cook? Be honest because if you look hard enough there is something amazing about all of us. Again keep writing until you can't think of anymore or your arm hurts through writing whichever comes first.

Exercise also has physical benefits as well such as a healthy heart, bones, and blood flow. For individuals who don't have the desire to utilize physical activity as a coping mechanism, may find it beneficial to use something such as dance to incorporate this into their treatment. Psychotherapy can be a great help for treating depression, studies show that 50% of people diagnosed with mild to moderate depression achieve symptom relief through psychotherapy. Self-help books on depression are essential to learning how to battle depression effectively. As there are many different diagnoses types for this condition, manic being the most severe form.In my personal experience as a creative writer and someone who uses writing is an emotional outlet, when I don't write for long periods of time my mental health is affected. Exercise has always been a major part of my life, and when I veered away from it I could feel the effect it had on my stress level and mood. Exercise has been proven to be one of the most fast acting anti-depressant treatments because of the immediate response our bodies has to it. There is no one size fits all treatment for this condition, everyone has different needs and their own unique response to treatments. However patients suffering with this mental health disorder have to all start with one thing, and that is acknowledging that you have a problem and you need help.

Norma was extremely fatigued. Frequently, when she came home from work, she would lie down and take a nap.She also had indigestion. It was so bad that she couldn't sleep the night through no matter how tired she was. It would keep her awake for hours every night. It's no wonder she was so tired all the time. On top of that, she was bothered by constant sinus drainage and twitching of her eyelids. Her right eye wouldn't remain open completely.

That's not all. Norma also had joint problems too. She could not stand up from a squatting position without help. So, to say she had some health challenges is putting it mildly.Norma was tested for food and chemical sensitivities. Seven months later, after avoiding her sensitive foods and following a rotation diet, all her symptoms were gone... as long as she continued to avoid her sensitive foods. She was glowing. The before and after difference in how she looked is very dramatic.

How does this work? When you have food sensitivities, your body is unable to completely digest the foods to which you are sensitive. The partially digested foods pass into your bloodstream and your immune system treats them as foreign invaders, like bacteria and viruses. It attacks them, causing an inflammatory reaction. As long as you continue to eat foods to which you are sensitive, you will continue to cause more and more inflammation to develop in your body and your health will decline.

Try to eat a snack every two hours to keep your blood sugar stable. This will prevent cravings and help you feel full until your next meal.Have a Slow, Healthy Dinner.By dinner time, you've put in a full day. You might be feeling tired or emotionally exhausted. Instead of binging on comfort foods, give yourself a variety of tasty but nutritious foods that will keep you feeling good all evening.Serve up some lean protein like roasted chicken or lean ground sirloin. Add a colorful side salad filled with your favorite seeds and veggies, and have a cup of whole grain pasta on the side.Be sure to skip the alcohol and caffeine with dinner; both can interfere with the quality of your sleep.Go for a Walk.A little after-dinner activity can help you calm your mind and loosen your muscles. Exercise also helps you sleep better at night, and good sleep is a vital part of feeling great tomorrow.Since you're just starting out, your goal should be to get 30 minutes of cardio activity. If you're not accustomed to exercise, take it easy with a walk around your neighborhood or a nearby park. If the weather's bad, stay home and dance around to your favorite music.Get a Good Night's Sleep. Now that you've exercised, hydrated yourself throughout the day, and avoided late doses of caffeine and alcohol, you're all set to have a good night's sleep. A little more stretching and relaxation can help clear your mind of racing thoughts. If noise or light interfere with your sleep, invest in some inexpensive ear plugs and a sleep mask. These might feel a little awkward at first, but the deep sleep they bring is well worth it.

Help a stranger. Random acts of kindness can do wonders to make you feel good. Helping someone to cross the road, buying coffee or tea for someone who looks like he/she needs it, giving way to someone in a hurry, offering to carry the grocery bags for someone who looks more tired than you are...these may sound like mundane, everyday incidents, but do not underestimate their effect.

Give yourself to others. Volunteer for social work. Feed an orphan, clean up your neighborhood, and help the environment. Nothing fattens the heart than being able to do well to your fellowmen. Volunteerism enables you to exercise your body and mind, as well as allow you to practice generosity and love for mankind. Loving others make you love your self more, as you acquire self confidence and enhances your self-esteem and self-worth. As an added bonus, volunteerism will give you the chance to meet like-minded individuals who can increase your network of friends. They can be your support group, and if they are as good friends are they are, can be pillars of support when the going gets rough for you.Treat yourself to a makeover once in a while. You deserve it. Not that you need to look better, but it is always advantageous to pamper yourself. Go to the spa. Have a facial. Indulge in a Thai massage. Going out of the spa, you can really feel yourself spic and span, smart-looking and confident. The way you look contributes to how you feel about yourself, therefore, look your best.Make time for yourself. Meditate. Open your thoughts in an environment of calm and serenity. Go climb a mountain. Pray. However you do it, talking to yourself allows you to keep in touch with your inner thoughts. You will discover a lot about yourself that way, and that is always a good thing.Introspection also allows you to plan ahead in your life. So, free from distractions and the chaos of the everyday world, you can chart your destiny in life. And having a plan, having a course to set would enable you to be more successful in your life. And success, my friend, makes you feel better about your self, because it is an affirmation of what you are and what you are capable of doing.Above all, love yourself. There is no greater love than loving yourself, because you cannot give what you do not have. So, if one is filled with love, you can be generous in giving out love. That is the best way to feel good about yourself.

Breaking the Sugar Addiction

By Sindy Zoer

It seems as though sugar is in everything these days, from ketchup to salsa to soup. It's in everything, I suppose, because we have come to expect it to be.And it's not just the white stuff we need to worry about. "Refined carbohydrates," such as white bread and white flour products, produce the same reaction in our bodies.Researchers have linked sugar consumption to everything from cavities to wrinkly skin, as well as wide range of much more serious health problems.[
[How To Break A Sugar Addiction]
]

Some research has been cited that says sugar has not been proven to be a direct cause to these health problems and may not even be directly linked to them, but when you consider that added sugar is basically non-nutritional calories, the lack of nutrition and obesity can cause health problems in themselves.Sugar, some researchers say, can lead to the damage of healthy cells, and can lessen the effectiveness of white blood cells, leading to a weakening of the immune system. Too much sugar means lots of empty calories, too, which can lead to obesity. As any parent knows, when you fill up on sugar, you simply aren't hungry for nutritious meals. And sugar can make you hyperactive and irritable, too, as it knocks your body out of whack. When you eat sugar, your blood sugar spikes. So your body secretes insulin, which sends your blood sugar crashing. The result? Irritability and fatigue. Plus, you're hungry again and probably craving another hit of sugar, and so the cycle repeats itself anew. One of the nicest things you can do for your body (and your mood) is to reduce your intake of added sugars and refined carbohydrates. What is the Daily Recommended Sugar Intake?

Condiments and Dressings. This is the "Sugar Free" age! There are plenty of alternatives to choose from! The only hiccup? Paying five dollars (or more!) for each bottle of sugar-free ketchup or sugar-free mustard! Again, I may resort to making ketchup and mustard myself if I think it's worth the effort.Checking my cupboards, it seems that my favorite instant oatmeal even has sugar already in it-12g to be exact! I cringe when I think of those unsuspecting people who add a little more sugar for added sweetness! In fact, just about everything in my cupboard contains sugar!

How to Break Your Sugar Addiction. So how do you start to reduce your sugar intake? Here are some tips.Try decreasing your intake of added sugar gradually. It can be difficult to suddenly cut all added sugar and refined carbohydrates. Try taking a week-by-week approach. One week, add less sugar to your morning coffee. Next week, replace your afternoon soda with bottled water. The following week, replace white bread with a whole grain alternative. Before long, you will find that the foods (and drinks) you used to love now taste sickeningly sweet. And you will likely find it easier to keep your moods on an even keel, too.

Also look for the types of sugar in the foods that you purchase and limit their consumption. Lactose, sucrose, and high fructose corn syrup, are some of the popular forms of carbs that are broken down to sugar and stored as fat.In Part 2 we learned how to control the spikes in our blood sugar by eating our sugary treats with other food.Get rid of the diet soda in our lives. Ouch! I know that one is difficult for some of you to swallow. You are saying: it satisfies my sweet tooth and doesn't' have any calories and doesn't add to my waistline. No way you believe that it is fueling your sugar cravings.

People can become addicted to many things. It is called sugar addiction when an individual craves sweet foods. It is a psychological and physical craving.Sugar increases serotonin production in the brain, something like anti-depressants. One of the ways you can tell if you're addicted to sugar is an extreme need to eat it. Once you consume enough of it your anxiety alleviates.

Avoid replacing added sugar with artificial sweeteners. Your best bet is to gradually reduce your taste for sweet foods, not to replace them with chemical alternatives. On ingredients lists, look for sucralose, saccharin, aspartame, acesulfame K, and neotame.Avoid the center of the supermarket as much as possible. That's where most of the processed foods are shelved. Instead, shop the perimeter for healthy, raw foods. If you have young kids, go to the grocery store by yourself. You may be less apt to come home with sugary treats. Plus, you can take more time to examine the labels for hidden sugar. If your kids are grade school age or older, take them along and enlist their help as Sugar Detectives. Give them each a list of hidden sugars and artificial sweeteners and turn it into a game.

Carefully measure how much honey you put in your tea and how much sugar you put in your coffee. Aim to put in a bit less each day or each week until you are drinking it either unsweetened or with just a bit of sugar.Buy items that are not sweetened, and add sugar only if you find that you need to. This will help you wean off the sugar gradually.Steer clear of sugars for breakfast. When you start your day with a sugar blast and crash, you may find yourself in a vicious cycle for the remainder of the day. Start your day with healthy lean protein and complex carbs. Try natural whole-grain breads and cereals for breakfast, along with a lowfat protein, such as skim milk, cottage cheese, or yogurt.

There is hope for stopping your sugar addiction. First, you need to admit to yourself that you have a problem. Something that tastes so good and makes you feel better will make it hard to for you to think there is anything wrong. Don't try to fool yourself into thinking brown sugar or raw sugar is fine to eat. Brown sugar is only made brown because molasses are added to it. It is still regular sugar. Raw sugar is crystalized and refined white sugar. It has a tiny amount of molasses added to it. These kinds of sugars are also unhealthy for your body.

Be careful not to make sugar taboo in your household. With children, especially, when you swear off something completely, you run the risk of creating a mystique around the forbidden food. Instead of running a completely sugar free household, make sure your children understand the effects that sugar can have on their bodies and their moods, and then help them understand the beauty of moderation. Encourage them to eat low fat protein and help them develop a taste for healthy whole grain carbs. Focus on well balanced, nutritious diet, instead of simply swearing off all sugar. Your cravings will slowly and naturally fade once you gain a better understanding of why they are cropping up in the first place.

As you make progress learning, it may become hard to keep motivated, and you may ask yourself why you are learning at all. Learning to sing is a process, after all. Try looking at why you want to sing and what you hope to achieve. What are your goals with singing? Below I have put some things to think about to encourage you to keep going. Personally, I find the last one the most interesting.Singing helps develop your physical conditioning and ability to focus. It gives you opportunities to have fun and socialize more, as well as helping to develop your self-confidence and increase your personal attractiveness.Health and Focus.Great singing requires proper breathing. That generally means taking deeper, healthier breaths.
[How To Learn How To Sing]

Sure, some people are born with innately rich natural talent, but then again, not everyone aspires to be a professional Grammy-winning pop star! Normal, everyday people can learn to develop a pleasing and impressive singing voice with the proper training. Usually that's all most of us want--to not have to be afraid that we'll be asked to perform a karaoke song at a party, or to just be able to sing along with our favorite songs on the radio without straining.

In fact, even if you sing for financial reasons it can still allow you to share your emotions and creative tendencies. This is great for your emotional health and your ability to focus.Fun and Social. It is easier to communicate with people who share an interest with you. The more activities you are involved in, the more people with whom you will share interests.Singing also puts you in a good position to join choirs and bands. These are great environments to have fun, make new friends, and find satisfaction as you progress.

Now I admit I was lucky there were guys there whose aim in life was to teach us rookies how to use our voice and as a result I ended up as a reasonably decent singer. Now when I go to a party, or I'm out for the night more often than not I'm called upon for a song or two. And I love it.So can anyone learn how to sing? Well if I done it so can you and you'll not have to go to a seminary to find out how. Below my signature is a review of a great resource that will have you singing like a pro in no time.

Wanna hear Randy Jackson say "Welcome to Hollywood Dawg?" And even have Simon love your singing voice as well? I can't promise you'll be the next American Idol, but if you love to sing, and are willing to put in the effort - I know how you can learn how to sing with the range and control of a professional singer at a fraction of the cost that private vocal coaches charge.

Everyone wants to be able to sing, that's human nature. Being able to sing well enough to make a career out of it, takes some training even if you have raw natural talent. Yes, you can learn to become a great singer - you can train your voice just like you learn any instrument. You can become a singer of whatever level you desire with the right training, plenty of practice, and dedication to sticking to it.

Think about it: healthy, focused, happy, popular, self-confident and a great singer. Sounds almost like a personal ad...Enough said. So what is stopping you now?It is said that good singers are born, not made. Many singing experts would disagree. While talent is a plus, it is not the only factor in determining a really good singer. Even the most popular singers in the world can tell you that anyone can learn to sing! The answer to the question, "Can anyone learn to sing?" is a resounding yes.Hiring costly voice coaches are not musts in learning how to sing. Ask the famous singers and not all of them went to singing lessons when they were starting in their careers. Aside from talent, and practice, confidence is very important.

Do you wonder, "Can I learn to Sing rock music?" Do you have dreams of spandex and adoring fans? Are you a classically trained singer who wants to explore their edgy side? Do you just need some vocal practice to go with your mean air guitar? What ever your issue is, yes, you can learn to sing rock music. It isn't an uncommon question. With the amount of garbage that is on the radio these days many people find themselves wondering if they can be a rock singer. In fact, it is such a popular question that there is an entire industry that is begging to answer that question for you.

Can anyone learn to sing? Of course, but not all are suited for every type of music. Our voice is very much like a musical instrument that should be used according to what type of music it is suited for.In singing the right way, you have to choose what song matches your voice. A soft and gentle voice that tries to sing powerful Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston songs is not a wise move because it will surely strain the vocal cords and may damage it.

Singorama is the one that I prefer. They have a series of MP3 files that you can download and load up in your iPod. No matter where you find yourself as a singer, Singorama will train you to have the vocal range and control of a professional singer.Singorama will train you use your natural voice, that's a big part of what makes them the best. Many others try to put you in a mold, make you sound like some popular singer instead of allowing you to perfect your own unique voice. If you learn with these other methods, you may find yourself without that Golden Ticket! But Jamorama can give you the chance to get your Golden Ticket.

The First Step to Financial Freedom

By Joel Wenger

I started my sites with objective to make investing and personal finance easy and straightforward. But sometimes, the concepts aren't easy to describe. Take financial freedom for example; there isn't a single definition that works for everyone. On the plus side, there is something underlying that concept that IS easy to describe, and we could all use a little more of it.

Looking back on my experiences in the investing world, there is one concept that has made a huge impact on my results. Actually, it is one word...influence. Influence is the capability to change results based on wealth, talent, status, or respect. As investors, we are easy targets for people with status, talent, and wealth. And people combine those three traits in an attempt to gain our respect, and then influence our decisions.

Now imagine that you are the "influencer". You are affecting your quality of life based on your personal wealth, talent, and status. You are empowered to make investment decisions. Sounds good, right?

Most people, myself included, spend a lot of time gathering information. And don't get me wrong; it is an important step in your investing journey. We are living in the information age, and have unprecedented access to knowledge. But knowledge itself is not enough. You need to apply that knowledge and make it work for you and your investments. Watching my money make more money is one of the most satisfying feelings I've experienced.

And I'm here to tell you that you can do the same thing! You have the ability to use your personal power to influence your prestige, wealth, ability and position. Your actions have a tremendous, life-changing impact on your home, career, and personal finances. I read stories every day about people who have overcome great obstacles by leveraging the incredible power residing within all of us.

Use this article as a reminder of the influence you already possess. It is not a new idea; in fact you already do it every single day. The example you set influences children, co-workers, and even your bosses. So why not apply that same power of influence to your personal finances and investments?

Go beyond thinking about investing, practice W.A.C.A.D.A.D. (Words Are Cheap, Deeds Are Dear), and exert some influence! You will never forget the first time you have money left over at the end of the month and don't know what to do with it.

Now that you know more about influence, I need you to help me do just that. My site has come a long way, but I am still just starting out. Consider clicking on the ads scattered around the site or sharing a link, in order to help me expand the influence of my safe investing message. Thank you for your support. It is because of people like you that I am able to have a site in the first place, and help those who are trying to help themselves.

The Remarkable Truth Behind Psalm 23

By Anne Trimble

I feel a wave of gratitude for Psalm 23 because when I think back on all the obstacles I've come across in this life, it has held my head up high when all appeared lost. It assisted me in recognizing that I an never alone in my anguish, and I can lean on some greater power than my exhausted options

I love the King James Version:

The LORD Is My Shepherd

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

My Faith Helped Me

Once upon a time, I appeared to have everything-- a devoted husband, fantastic kids, and a well-known Ministry. Then when it seemed that things were as perfect as could be, everything tumbled. I was betrayed by a business associate and lost my money and the recognition of my peers.

What was especially upsetting was that I was a nobody from a small town and none of the tremendous gains in life I had achieved came easily. It took a substantial amount of effort to become the creator of one of the most influential Christian organizations in this country. Yet while it took me years to achieve this level of high success, it just took a short while for me to lose everything. I lost my Ministry and my dear husband lost his health. Later, the collapse even resulted in a divorce.

Yet today I have not only recovered from all my losses, but I am now the President of Real Money USA, a highly successful financial company that helps Americans preserve their assets through investing in gold and silver rather than relying on our fiat currency which is losing its value at a precipitous rate.

What is my secret of success? How did I come out of the wreck alright?

My answer in one word: Faith.

Renewed faith gave me the strength to carry on, to persevere past obstacles that would've crushed anyone's spirit. Reading Psalm 23 to myself and my children gave me the courage to believe in a brighter future when it seemed hopeless to believe.

God has His plans for believers even when things appear utterly hopeless, He stands by our side. It is when we have lost all hope, when death itself looks like a reprieve, that we need to remember His Word; and by recalling it, we're made strong once again. Psalm 23 is His Word and it will hold you if you are currently experiencing trying circumstances and awful anxiety. Review the words over and over; a calm spirit will envelop you, and you will know that you are not alone in life.
