Do Graduates Think Ahead?

By Louise Adams

It has been determined that only 19% of graduates put real thought into their career before embarking on their course at university.

A study of 1730 students has discovered that most students did not put much thought into the job roles their degree might lead them to before they embarked on their first year of study. Once they had begun their course this seemed to change pretty quickly.

Around 79% of year one students revealed that they began considering their future careers, which suggests that 21% had not begun thinking about it.

It was also revealed that around 42% of people asked suggested that the media was the responsible for making them believe that they would not find a job after they graduate. The students were quite divided on this topic with 18% saying the media absolutely made them feel demotivated and yet 17% stated that the negative stories in the media had spurred them on wanting to prove the media wrong.

When asked about what their biggest worry was about searching for a job, 69% asked suggested that the competition level was their biggest fear. 55% of students asked stated that they worried that there just weren't enough jobs around for everybody.

25% of students asked stated that employers were too picky and that the criteria for finding work was too difficult. This shows that

A quarter of students genuinely believed that employers were too picky and the criteria for getting a job was too harsh. This suggests that the students thought that they did have the adequate skills and talent but felt it was difficult to get themselves noticed.

The current recession is also blamed for the attitude of the students and only 4% of those due to graduate said they felt at all optimistic about the current economic climate. Eleven per cent said they felt that they may start feeling more positive in the future.

Graduates tended to have a negative outlook when it came to salaries with 54% saying they felt glum about their potential earnings.
