Barbara Askin Retires From The Kids Wish Network

By Sharlene Fleming

In the Holy Bible Jesus shared with His disciples the great commission. The focus was to go into the world, teaching, preaching, baptizing, and making an overall difference. He then said that he would be with them always. Barbara Askin may not be referred to as a Pastor or Reverend, but she has surely been engaged in great commission tasks. And as she enters retirement she should be assured that the Lord will continue to be with her in all she does.

As Jesus hung on a cross experiencing excruciating pain, he made time to think about others. He communicated with a thief who hung on a cross as well. He confirmed that someone was in position to care for his mother after his death. When Barbara suffered with her husband during long days in the hospital, she observed and felt the suffering and pain of children who were dealing with the agony of cancer and related treatments. A part of Barbara was suffering, yet she moved forward with a great commission spirit towards others.

Often encouraging and promising enterprises can be brought forth out of difficulty and tragedy. Barbara's mission of love followed this same path. Before the new millennium her husband David was lost to cancer. In his memory the Kids Wish Network began. Now, after fifteen wonderful years of great service, Barbara Askin will enter retirement.

Kids Wish Network, or KWN, is known by its mission. It is a charitable organization that operates internationally, and is dedicated to giving hope, happy memories, and heightened quality of life to children dealing with life changing situations. KWN helps kids and their families with several significant programs. From a hospital to a homeless shelter, the network is being active in making differences.

There are kids with illnesses that God shall, with infinite wisdom, summon back to heaven much earlier. For these gifts from heaven, Kids Wish Network seeks to act as a view of Gods love. When they enter heaven they realize they experienced perhaps a measure of the same love while they were on earth.

From visits by pro football players, musicians, and actors, kids with various illnesses gain a measure of joy and happiness during difficult times. Kids in remote areas that experience the pains of abuse, neglect, and homelessness are being helped through KWN.

The entire world owes a debt of gratitude to Barbara for the differences she makes. For each child that has been assisted there are regions, organizations, and families which will also benefit. It is uncertain if any of the assisted children will find cures for cancer, invent things that will create jobs, or be elected President. Regardless, they now have an opportunity to.

Barbara Askin retires, but those who know her best will agree that her love for others and the compassion to help them will never go away. After all, that is just who she is. The Kids Wish Network will continue this form of great commissioning, seeking to help as many as possible. After all, this is exactly what Barbara would want.
