The Excitement Of Becoming An Entrepreneur

By Rena Hudson

Becoming an entrepreneur is possible for everyone with a dream and an idea, skill, or talent. Some people make much better employees than bosses, even for themselves. Some like the security of a guaranteed check every pay period. Others find the constraints of working under supervision irksome and the idea of self-employment liberating. If the latter is you, maybe you should take the plunge into owning your own business.

The process can be easy. All that is usually required to 'set up shop' is a business license. The internet has opened up a whole new arena of enterprise. If you don't want a virtual business, you can run a booth at a flea market, cut and color hair in your kitchen, or open a booth in an antique mall. You can sell the produce from your garden on the side of the road or at a farmer's market. This is running your own business.

Of course, sometimes you need special training, or a license, or a certificate of skill. If you want to own an electrical contracting company, an accounting firm, or a counseling practice, you will have to comply with local and state requirements to be legally allowed to operate.

On a larger scale, you will need working capital for things like insurance, inventory, employee wages, advertising, and a million other things. To open a grocery, for example, you would require premises, shelving, cash registers, refrigerator and freezer units, special lighting, and easily cleaned floors and fixtures that comply with health codes. All this and more needs to be in order before you open for business.

Capital can be borrowed, if you have security to put up for the loan. It can come from personal savings or credit, from friends and family, or from others who might want to share the risk and the responsibility - as well as the profits - as partners. Most beginning businesses are under-capitalized, according to the experts, so make sure you know how much money you will need to open up and operate before significant income is generated.

If the process sounds complex and maybe daunting, you might not want to try going out on your own. For some, the dangers are part of the thrill. Running your own business teaches life skills you can't learn in college. Anyway, think about the disappointment of having a dream and never trying to realize it. After all, you just might make it.

A successful small business is a ticket to the big time for many people. Although most start-ups fail, the base of our national economy is small companies. Their owners often achieve high incomes and a great way of life. For fascinating reading, check out some of the how-to books and tapes that are available on being your own boss.

Have you got a great idea? Do you think other people need or want what you have to offer? Becoming an entrepreneur could be your ticket to fame and fortune. Even if you only get to a level you are comfortable with, it still might be more fulfilling than a career working for someone else.
