Advice On Using A Christian Executive Coach

By Katy Parfait

Christian leaders are responsible for leading people and executing a particular vision. Because not all leaders and those with visions are skilled at executing or using tactics, they often hire personnel to accomplish those tasks. A Christian Executive Coach is someone who steps in to do same in the life of a leader, serving numerous purposes in respect of the larger picture of goals and objectives.

First, while we are leading our organization, the organization is not the "whole me". We have other aspects of our lives as leaders that matter to us. We have families, spiritual lives, friendships and community relationships that are part of our broader life vision. A primary objective for using a coach is to make sure they are carrying all of those objectives at the same time. Use your coach to make sure you don't forget about the "whole you".

Secondly, your coach can be your motivation. Primary leaders lead; but, they lead alone. No one is there to make sure they do their job.

If they fail to show up, they fail to lead, the whole organization suffers and ultimately, they will not see their vision accomplished. No leader can be "on" all the time. Use your coach to be your "life alarm". Give them permission to challenge you directly, keep you motivated and keep you on track.

Finally, your coach should have the ability to be a wise sounding board for you. Leaders have a million terrific ideas, but not all of them should be tried. Use your coach as a sounding board to help you discern good ideas that are on track with your life goals from ones that are distractions. While no visionary likes to hear it, they all need to; give them permission to say, "that's not a good idea."

Your Christian Executive Coach is an investment you are making in your success. Use them strategically to keep you on course with your objectives. They are your safety net.
