Basic Information On Racism In Professional Sports

By Mattie MacDonald

The world is home to over six billion human beings. These people belong to more than one hundred and ninety countries that share the planet together and have their own rules and laws. All of these countries have their own national languages and dialects that allow people to communicate well with each other.

These differences often lead to misunderstandings and instances of racism. Discrimination and prejudice are often contributory factors to the said rift. Even in the present times where everybody is aiming for openness and equality, it is quite saddening to note that such an issue still exists. This has even went on to seriously impede the growth of many facets of living, as even entertainment has been affected by racism in professional sports.

This social issue often exists because there are practices, beliefs, and even political systems that consider certain races to be inherently superior or inferior as compared to some. Most of the time, they are based entirely presumed inherent traits, abilities, and qualities. All of these has lead top a further rift between nations because people act based on presumptions.

Racism is not inherent in everyone. No one is born and instantly hates other races. For most cases, experts have reasons to believe that ignorance is one of its main causes. The things that one does along with the others in the community is the right thing for them. The things that others do differently are then considered wrong by these people, only because this is not the way they do such things.

Another cause is fear. As the old adage goes, people generally fear what they do not understand. Instead of taking measures to know and learn, they often react negatively to these and imply that they are better. This often stems from fear above everything else. They are afraid that they might be replaced by something better, which is why they spread about bad things to eliminate threats.

Insecurities can also be quite contributory. They are suffering behind the no nonsense exterior. Whether consciously or otherwise, they often try and inflict the same pain to others who seem happier than they are. As they say, misery likes company.

The issue is a very serious one. It has even affected so many lives and so many parts of living. It can even have the power to destroy a person. It turns an otherwise happy and ambitious individual to somebody who is bitter, violent, and angry. It also hinders them from seeing the good and the beautiful in things. Ultimately, it can lead to depression and loss of the will to live.

It has managed to affect everything that man participates in, especially with the things that are supposed to make him happy. In the world of entertainment, racism is so rampant that it is evident even in professional sports. Instead of supporting those who are talented, people choose to see others based on their perception of a certain race, which is often not pretty.

What is saddening is that people fail to see people for their talents and skills. These should only be the main concern of sports. Everyone who is good should be allowed in, and not because of his gender, race, religion, or color.
