The Racism In Sports Media

By Enid Hinton

The word network is used to refer to the tools that are used to store and deliver news and information to the public. We all interact with the media in one way or another. Racism is the unfair victimization of other people based on their race. Racism in sports media is a problem that is yet to be solved. It is evident in most sports events if not all.

The networks and sports fight for fairness. A fairness that gets wiped away by racial thoughts. When a player is judged by his race, his heart sulks. His passion for the game is not enough for him to showcase his abilities. Being discriminated kills him inside and he becomes unproductive on the outside. Sports is only fair when it is all about talent.

When chauvinism infests itself in both the press and games, it takes away the fairness that they both fight for. It denies very talented individuals opportunities of a life time. The discrimination causes them to shy away from sporting activities. It kills their will to do what they love. It destroys their driving force and decreases their productivity.

If racism in sports is to be put to an end, strong measures need to be effected. Since it is a problem that is touching everyone, directly or indirectly, we need to solve it as a whole.

Is it possible to bring this unfair victimization to an end? Well, we can say nothing is impossible in this world. Although we would need to establish strong measures to measure up to the situation.

First we need to treat others the way we would want to be treated. When a player is not from the same ethnic group as we are it does not mean that he or she should be treated any different. We are all the same. Very tiny differences gives as an illusion to think that we are better. In the real sense, we are worse for victimizing a person who had no control over where he or she came from.

The networks should help in protecting the victims of racism. They should refrain from airing comments that will discriminate others. They should be a mirror of the challenges affecting the sports industry. Show the evils existing in it and give a way forward to the game lovers. In that they can be part of a permanent solution.

Penalties should be put in place for those who violate the rights of others by subjecting them to chauvinism. Spectators should be punished for discrimination of participants. The same should also apply to journalist who spread racialism through the media. This penalties should be to show people that there are consequences for their actions against our esteemed sportsmen and women.

Therefore, the only way to kill the problem is by eliminating it from our minds. Killing from the source. With that, we will be able to look at the world with a different perspective. We should not use our minds as weapons but as tools that we can help others and ourselves in the process. Let us take a step as individuals and make the difference to the whole society.
