There Are Many Programs That Aim At Helping The Youth Of Chicago

By Amy Meyer

Society and the communities that make up society have changed considerably. People no longer care for each other and nobody seems to have time to help others. It is a culture of each one for himself and in the process, many people become adrift. It is especially young people that are in danger of being lost between the many cracks of modern society. Young people need nurturing and direction. That is why it is so very important to have programs helping the youth of Chicago.

One of the reasons why there are so many youngsters that need help is that so many families are dysfunctional. Children grow up in single parent households where there is not time mutual nurturing caring and joint activities. Subsequently, many youngsters are left to their own devices and they are in great danger of being exposed to dangerous influences. There are always predators looking for youngsters that crave attention.

Sadly, unemployment is extremely high and numerous young people simply cannot find jobs after completing school. Many others drop out early, because they have lost hope in the future. Such young people do not have any skills to offer potential employers. Some organizations have seen this trend and are offering young people training courses that may help them to gain jobs, to bolster their sense of self worth.

When youngsters become disillusioned in society they are in grave danger of developing psychological and behavioral problems. They lose their self respect, feel as if they are worthless and they often develop depression and experience high levels of anxiety. Thankfully, many churches and other organizations offer counseling to such young people, creating a place where they feel care for, loved, respected and accepted as worthwhile individuals.

Substance abuse among young people has become a major problem. Youngsters take drugs or alcohol to forget about their problems and to have a good time. They almost always fall into the truly horrible trap of addiction. Some helper organizations offer programs that will assist addicted young people, but it is unfortunately very difficult to convince them that they need such help and successes are few.

Vast numbers of young people survive on the streets. To help alleviate this problem some organizations have set up places of safety where these youngsters can sleep safely and where they can get a proper meal. These places are also ideal for other organizations that need to reach out to young people in trouble. Without a place to stay it is almost impossible for a youngster to enter a program or to progress in life.

Organizations, charities, churches and even individuals offer excellent programs that can be of much help to young people in trouble. Sadly, they are severely hampered by a lack of resources. There are not enough volunteers, money, facilities and other resources to reach out to the vast number of urban young people that are desperately in need of their help. Much is being done, but much more remains to be done.

If youngsters in trouble are left in the lurch then society has failed them. This failure will come back to haunt them in times to come. More needs to be done to create structures and to allocate resources to help young people in trouble to cope with life and to find purpose in their own lives.
