How Has the Guayabera Evolved Thus Far?

By Anastasia Branch

Few people would not recognize the guayabera on first sight. Most people coming from Latin backgrounds know the shirt on sight. And even now, it continues to gain favor with younger, newer generations.

The four-pocket shirt has gone through quite a number of changes, though. A Cuban peasant's shirt, it is claimed, served as the inspiration for the pattern. Nowadays, though, it looks quite different from its supposed basis.

Lighter cloths are often preferred by those making these shirts. There are usually two vertical stripes on it. A quartet of pockets typically goes with the design.

To this day, no one is sure exactly why the shirt was developed to have four pockets instead of just two. We still do not know for sure what people used to put in them and why four were required. There are some suggestions that tiny fruits were put into the pockets back then.

The guayabera has a lot of value as an article of clothing clearly made for maximum convenience. Owing to the fact that is typically fabricated out of light cloth, it is a good pick for people who need something that will not make them feel uncomfortable in hot seasons or places. Should you also happen to require pocket space, there are the four pockets ready and waiting.

Aside from all that, it can make a nice fashion statement. If this shirt design has endured over the ages, it cannot simply be due to the convenience of its design but must surely be partly due to the appeal of its appearance. Indeed, there have been more and more alterations to it for various purposes, fashion included.

For example, one can find formal types of it made out of top-quality cloth. These are most often long-sleeved. The decorations tend to be more flamboyant on these versions.

There are even kiddy versions. The children's versions of the shirt actually do not depart much from the design used for adult versions, and are only smaller variations of the same. Children love these because they are so lightweight yet are also classy enough to please discerning parents who want them to look dressed-up all the time.

There are even dress versions being made now for women. They have been getting more popular of late. A lot of females are starting to wear them these days.

There is so much more that can be done with the guayabera, though. In other words, we will probably see even more variants of it in the future. Who can really predict what designers shall do next with this classic style?
