All duties of an online secretary are performed from a home PC or laptop. Each business will require different types of work from their virtual secretary, but in general, it includes word processing tasks, email processing tasks and possibly scheduling and electronic filing. Transcription work is often completed by a homeworker as well.

All positions of this nature will require that you are contactable via email or other means of internet communication platforms, such as Skype. Therefore, you must have a reliable internet connection. One that is of a high speed is valuable for the job as well. All work that is received and completed will also be sent via email. Additional equipment that may be necessary could include a fax machine, a printer capable of copying and scanning processes and a land line phone connection.

A home office is ideal for someone who works online, however, any other area of the home could be considered. It should be a quiet place, away from distractions, with space for the necessary equipment. Working from home has many benefits, one of which is the saving of funds usually devoted to commuting.

There are no specific degrees or diplomas required in order to become a VA, but relevant experience is beneficial. The company looking for assistance will specify the type of tasks to be completed, and some may also expect some sort of qualification. However, most will be interested in your past experience, your proficiency in computer applications and your typing abilities.

The skills required by an online secretary are often similar to those needed by an office worker who performs tasks at a brick and mortar establishment. A few skills that are beneficial include a fast and accurate typing ability, excellent written communication skills and a reasonable knowledge of spreadsheet, word processing and database computer applications. The person should be capable of a wide variety of tasks, and work of a high quality.
