The Results Of Racism In Sports Media

By Leslie Ball

In the early days before the existence of all the big cities and the likes, all areas were rural and everyone was happy living in their respective home town. This was very simple and promoted development as these people were united by a common culture. This however changed with time and people started moving around and mixing cultures. The results of racism in sports media many and quite detrimental.

However, with the development of urban areas, everything else had to change. People would now leave their home towns and travel to the urban centers in the search for better living standards, employment opportunities and more advanced technologies. This was no problem since surely they deserved a chance at a better life. The hindrance came in the mixture of cultures, traditions and norms. This did not exactly work so well.

The mixture of cultures in these cities created a complex situation of coexistence. This was not received so well by many people and it led to treat other cultures differently from their own. Different characters and habits developed within the people. This was a community without a common identity or any other unifying factor, cooperation was hard.

One of the commonest tendencies amongst these people was nepotism. It can be described as the tendency for one to favor the people of either his family or clan while appointing jobs to subordinates in the organization. This culture undermines development as most times the employed people do not have the required skills to perform the given job.

Others did this on a rather larger scale. They practiced tribalism and tribal prejudice. This is basically a situation where by a person in a place of authority favors those that have tribal affiliations to him. It is a very common vice in the major cities. Many people would rather employ on a tribal basis other than qualification and competence on the job.

Tribalism was as well very common in these cities. Most favors and big promotions were don not basing on performance but rather the tribe that one affiliates with. This was very bad for business as most people did not hire for competence but rather on the basis of family race and tribe as well. Corruption also became very popular in the places forcing the police to take counter measures in order to halt this character.

This was especially in the sports media. A sport is an activity carried out for leisure purposes, most of these activities are competitive in nature and at the end one or more of the players are expected to emerge victors. The commonest sports activities carried out include examples such as rugby, volleyball, basketball and others. The particular sport played depends on the place. Some people involve self in sports for leisure and recreation whiles other for economic reasons.

This situation created such problems as the media houses were at the fore front of the racism vice. A certain media house would make it a point to discredit the players that are from other racial affiliations. This challenged the sports industry and almost crippled if it were not for legal interventions.
